An older piece, but still one of my favorites. I was living in my freshman dorm, and one evening I simply could not get to sleep, as this image was in my head and wouldn’t leave me alone until I at least sketched it out. It turned out more or less the way I pictured it, and I am still quite proud of it. One of the best parts of doing this piece was researching how to properly shade the egg so it didn’t simply look like a bubble on top of the figure. The end result is essentially a sandwich of layers: the shaded back of the egg, then the figure above it, then the shaded front of the egg on top of everything.
I enjoy playing with the distinction between specific and abstract, and this neatly straddles both distinctions.
One could probably read a message relating to birth and life into this, but at the time I was thinking more along the lines of meditation and personal growth.
